Outbuilding, Orono, Minnesota. Inspired by English cottages, this boathouse and its gardens also take their cue from the detailing of wooden boats. Originally a storage shed, this little building could not be expanded or moved due to zoning restrictions. Albertsson Hansen carefully utilized the existing shell to create a recreation pavilion. The main house sits on the bluff above, and a wood stair connects the two levels, completing a graceful connection to the waterfront below. The boathouse was re-roofed with wood shingles, and given new windows and doors. A half-bath and kitchenette were added as well, along with a wood-burning fireplace.
- Vertical grain Douglas Fir paneling and cabinetry.
- Ipe deck and stairs.
- Exterior wall hung storage cabinets proved places to hide life jackets and other boating accessories.
- Counters aligned inside and out allow through window service to the deck.
